How Did River Irpin Protect the Capital and Saved Ukrainians

On World Water Day a Ukrainian journalist and people’s deputy Viktoria Syumar spoke on her Facebook page about the heroic river Irpin and thanked it for the chance given to Kyiv to survive. We publish the text in full.

“Today is the World Water Day. Water is not only the source of life. In the case of Kyiv, the water became the basis of protection, the protection of the Ukrainian capital. And it gave a chance for the city to survive… I’m talking about the river Irpin.

I have to tell you this story: the Russians really planned to get to Kyiv in the first three days, to ride calmly in tanks from the Zhytomyr and Chernobyl directions.

But they were stopped. And the river Irpin was very helpful for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Where the river flows into the Kyiv Sea, above Lutezh, locals dug a mouth and created a floodplain, in which more than 160 units of enemy equipment was stuck. This gave time to deploy the artillery and stop them in the direction of Vyshgorod.

The enemy went to the right, to Gostomel, Bucha, Irpin, but since all the bridges there were broken, the rashists could not cross this unique natural boundary – the river Irpin.

Every day they build pontoon crossings, the day before yesterday the pontoons were demolished by the waters of the river itself, the water is especially high in the spring, yesterday the pontoon was shot down by the Armed Forces in the Moshchun area.

In all places above the Zhytomyr route and even a little lower, the enemy is firmly held by this unique river, which has become a real Defender of Kyiv! They did not cross Irpin anywhere, because Irpin is the first frontier of the Kyiv fortress.

… Our ancestors definitely were experienced warriors and based the “mother of Russian cities” in such a way that each river – Irpin, Dnipro, Ros; every forest, every height around, makes Kyiv a great European fortress.

Let it be so! Let our Kyiv be protected by the forces of nature together with the power of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and our glorious territorial defense. Let all these loud statements of the occupiers about the “encirclement and capture” of Kyiv cost them numerous and, most importantly, fruitless losses.

And Glory to the river Irpin, which we must continue to protect very much. Because it protects us!”

Earlier we wrote that the river Irpin overflowed its banks and Demidov, where active battles are being executed by Russian troops, was threatened with flooding.
