Oleksandr Markushyn: Irpin Withstood the World’s Second Army
Irpin Mayor Oleksandr Markushyn said in an interview with CNN that the city “withstood the world’s second largest army”.
“Irpin is a small city, but it did not allow the world’s second largest army to move forward. We had the spirit, a strong army and territorial defense, and we had nowhere to retreat. We are fighting for our land. The Russians attacked Irpin and wanted to take it, but could not. They captured 30% of the city. We knocked them out a few days ago. Now Irpin is 100% Ukrainian”, he said
Markushyn noted that Ukrainian forces destroyed more than 100 cars, and the humanitarian rescue operation is still ongoing because many residents of Irpin were unable to leave.
“It’s still dangerous here, because Bucha, Vorzel and Gostomel are nearby. They are under Russian troops, who are still firing. Use the “Grads” system, shells and mines. We take out the wounded and corpses. Today and yesterday we evacuated about 500 people. Today I evacuated about 50 children and 100 adults. There are many destroyed buildings, schools and kindergartens. There are completely destroyed residential high-rises”, the mayor added.
We will remind, the city is liberated from occupiers, but according to the mayor – Irpin is constantly being fired upon from Bucha and Vorzel.
